Formal Living room gets its inspiration from a painting

Full Design Experience

Family Friendly

CLIENT:Sara & Dan
LOCATION: Sewickley, PA

A formal living room that was a catchall of furniture gets a full design makeover with a large canvas triptych as the main inspiration for the color palette. By pulling the colors and shapes from this oversized artwork the room achieves a modern balance of color and cohesive design. The cutouts in the art are mimiced in the rug pattern. The large faceted coffee table is familty friendly and coordinates with the pillow fabric and accessories. The coral chair and pillows pull the bright spots of color from the canvas.

This family had so much space to play with in their new home since relocating from Chicago. With that came the goal of using the formal living room as a respite from work and a space away from the children’s toys. The priorities were to honor the large artwork that had been gifted to the couple and to blend the lower ceilings and traditional room layout of the front of the house with the more modern open concept spaces at the back of the house. The clients specifically opted against a TV in this room, preferring it to serve as a dedicated spot for reading and relaxation away from the main area of the home. Additionally, as the mother of two boys, there was a secondary goal to infuse a more feminine touch into the space.

The lower ceilings and separate location of the formal living room from the other areas of the house presented some challenges. The house had a large open family room connected to the kitchen in the back, it was crucial to give the front living area with purpose and presence, especially as the first space visible upon entering the home. With a busy young family it was also a challenge to select products that were luxurious and modern without harsh edges and delicate finishes.

By relocating the artwork from the back of the room to the wall facing the doorway we changed the overall scale of the room. From there, the arrangement took shape with flexible seating, a large thick wool rug, and a mirror on the far wall to carry the light and draw your eye inward. The use of predominantly solid fabrics and a few strategically placed patterns achieved a fresh, modern, and feminine ambiance, inviting warmth into the space.
