Holidays and entertaining were the inspiration for this large living room and dining room design. The only original item that remained was the chandelier in the dining room. The rest of the space received a much needed update in the form of new flooring, recessed lighting, and a modern facelift including a custom mantle for the fireplace. Performance fabric upholstery keeps the room bright and family friendly, while a stunning round table with leather chairs became the centerpiece for puzzles and card games.Vibrant rugs and artwork provide pops of color and big impact. No details were missed from the pillows, window treatments, floral arrangements and accessories. Years later, these clients have kept in touch, and still rave about how much they love the room!
Goals:
“The objectives for this design were straightforward. These clients wanted impact, room to entertain, and an updated feel to this outdated room. One of the goals was to keep the room modern and sophisticated but not stuffy and unapproachable. Our clients loved color but wanted something timeless that would stay in fashion for many years. To achieve this, the dated parquet flooring and brick fireplace facade were removed. They also wanted a new dining room that flowed into the family room and could allow for multiple seating areas when entertaining. A space for board games and puzzles was also essential. Lastly, being very into Christmas, the design had to accommodate the homeowners’ holiday decor easily.
“
Challenges:
The few challenges in the space revolved around the timing of the project coinciding with the COVID pandemic. There were delays on a few items and we had to accommodate for everyone’s safety at the time. Another challenge presented itself with a cabinet that was not constructed properly to carry the weight of its own door design. This item was returned and we selected an alternative that ended up being a favorite piece in the space.
Solutions:
For the design goals on this project we had such a large space to work with that we were easily able to create the various seating areas ideal for entertaining. By selecting performance fabrics we kept the furniture light and neutral while adding colorful elements in the art and rugs. This gave the dressier space a playful nature that kept it approachable but modern. By extending the existing brick hearth up to the ceiling and cladding the area with a polished porcelain tile it completely changed the scale of the room and helped balance the length and lower ceiling. New hickory flooring brought in another element of interest and texture. Clean lines, simple profiles, and high end accessories elevated the look and feel dramatically.
Only the good stuff, promise!
