LOCATION: Sewickley, PA

This Hall bathroom was stuck in the 1980’s and not in a good way. From the mauve tile to the laminate vanity cabinet it all needed to go. The plaid mosaic floor was a stretch for the homeowner but it’s one of their favorite elements now. The mixture of black and brushed brass fixtures keeps the room casual but dramatic. The tile is neutral but interesting and fits within the rest of the home beautifully. We upgraded the shower to include a hand held shower head and the vanity and medicine cabinets all have electrical for charging shavers and toothbrushes. The heater towel warmer does double duty by keeping the space warmer being in a 100+ year old house.

Goals:

The top priority for the hall bathroom was to remove the tub and put in a shower. Storage was not an issue but the cabinets were worn and outdated. The clients also needed more outlets and USB chargers for shavers and toothbrushes to stay charged. Aesthetically, they wanted to have the room flow with the rest of the house but also feel updated and not boring. This bathroom is also used by guests so a grab bar for older relatives was a must.

Challenges:

The shower area has a soffit, and the plumbing wall ended at an awkward spot. The tall ceilings and somewhat narrow width made the room feel out of proportion. Being in an older home, the room could get cold too.

Solutions:

First, we extended the plumbing wall to the ceiling to visually clean up the space. Then, by using the same mosaic flooring in the shower helps the room feel wider. Next we introduced the warm wood tones and soft accents on the vanity to keep the space inviting. The medicine cabinet is taller and has integrated power and accent lighting. By using the tall medicine cabinet and taller shower door the proportions of the room helps balance out the 10ft ceilings and narrow footprint. Lastly, the heated towel warmer helps not only dry towels but provides additional warmth to the space on cold days.
