Maintaining family memories with much-needed updates

First Floor Renovation

Traditional

Beautiful Built-ins

CLIENT:Greg & Diana
LOCATION: Wexford, PA

This first-floor renovation completely redefined how this home is lived in. With updated flooring and clever space planning, the usable space was dramatically enhanced. We transformed the eat-in kitchen into a dedicated dining area, converted the former dining room into a functional home office, and revamped the formal living room into a relaxing lounge.

In the family room, lowering the fireplace mantle by six inches created the ideal setup to position the TV above. The kitchen underwent a stylish update: perimeter cabinets were extended to the ceiling with new top pieces, paired with fresh countertops and a striking backsplash. The addition of a black-finished island and pantry not only added workspace and storage but also brought a modern touch while preserving the custom-made, sentimental oak cabinets.

For the home office, two pocket doors provide optimal WFH (work-from-home) flexibility, complemented by built-in storage. The front lounge now features ample storage with inset doors in a complimentary oak finish. Throughout the home, custom furnishings and window treatments add a personalized touch that truly makes this renovation shine.

Goals:

This home has been the heart of 20+ years of cherished memories for an empty-nester couple. The primary goal was to modernize the space while preserving the warmth and character that made it feel like home. Retaining the existing kitchen cabinets, built by a family member, was essential while maximizing storage and functionality. Additionally, durable and neutral flooring and walls were needed to accommodate seasonal décor changes.

In the post-COVID world, creating a functional home office with a “Zoom-ready” backdrop became a priority. Lastly, the family room needed a layout that better supported TV viewing and relaxation with new furniture and improved flow.

Challenges:

Once we identified the dining room as the new home office location, the challenges became minimal. Working with the existing oak cabinets provided inspiration and set the direction for the overall design.

Solutions:

Relocating the home office was the first major step. From there, we embraced the warm oak tones of the cabinets and contrasted them with a dramatic black island and pantry, creating a bold yet cohesive look. Repeating the black and oak finishes throughout the home tied everything together, maintaining familiarity while elevating the design.

Custom built-ins throughout the first floor brought added storage and functionality. The formal living room, once rarely used, is now a favorite spot for music, games, and relaxation. We were able to keep the soul of the home intact while giving it a fresh, upgraded feel.
